Study: Corn Syrup Is Hurting Your Brain
Blisstree » EAT16 May 2012 | 12:46 pmA sugary diet won’t just put on pounds, it could also slow down your brain. A new study from UCLA researchers shows for the first time how a diet high in high-fructose corn syrup can hamper your ability to learn and remember information. But Omega-3s (which are pretty much goddamn magic, right?) can help counteract the effects of too much fructose, the authors say. The study—published this week in the peer-reviewed Journal of Physiology—zeroed in on high-fructose corn syrup in diets, instead of cane sugar. The average American consumes more than 40 pounds of high-fructose corn… -

やぐら亭 (Yaguratei in Hatsudai)
11 May 2012 | 9:53 amBack from my month in America, and it's back to business as usual. Except for the business part. April and May tend to be my lightest work months of the year. Such is the life of a freelance teacher in Japan.Taking advantage of the time, I went about exploring my neighborhood. I often take the less traveled road to get west of Shinjuku. Running parallel to the 6 lane Koshukaido (that giant thoroughfare with an expressway above the thing), is a pleasant street with less of the bustle. Just this last week, though, I found a street parallel to that one, aptly named 不動通 (idle street). This… -
Misoya in New York
8 May 2012 | 7:43 pmWhen Nate was still living in Tokyo a few years back, our frequent ramen outings would end not with the standard gochisosama, but with the rhetorical question, "Another bowl?" Welcome to New York.Fellow ramen nuts Michael and Sarah were eager to join. It's a good thing, this is a social place. SLICE Act Would Bring Less Pizza, More Veggies To School Lunches
15 May 2012 | 2:19 pmGotta love a politician who loves his puns—especially if he also wants to get unhealthy pizza out of school cafeterias. I’m talking about Rep. Jared Polis, a Democrat from Colorado, whose proposed SLICE Act would end school lunch programs’ reliance on tomato paste—i.e. pizza sauce—as a qualified vegetable. “While tomato paste has a small amount of nutrients, pizza is loaded with sugar, salt, bread and cheese, which carry a great deal of fat and carbohydrates that turn into sugar during digestion,” a press release from Polis’s office noted. “Categorizing pizza as a… -
Unpasteurized Tempeh Recalled For Salmonella–Is It Safe?
15 May 2012 | 11:54 amFollowing the recall of unpasteurized tempeh sold by Asheville, North Carolina company Smiling Hara, FDA officials say they’ve been able to find the source of a strain of Salmonella that has sickened as many as 60 individuals in several states: an online retailer who sells tempeh starter cultures. The company now appears to have disappeared (and the FDA is looking into whether or not they sold any other tainted cultures), but plenty of consumers still have questions–most notably, whether or not unpasteurized tempeh is safe to eat, and, if so, how they should handle it to avoid… -
Scarlett Johansson Calls Out Tabloids For Claiming She Crash Dieted For The Avengers
15 May 2012 | 10:26 amThere’s just something so delightfully refreshing about celebrities speaking directly to their fans. This week Scarlett Johansson bypassed her press rep and wrote a blog for Huffington Post addressing the lies tabloids printed about her “dramatic weight loss” for her role as Black Widow in The Avengers. While she confesses to working out harder than usual to prepare for the movie, she completely denies her alleged crash diet that supposedly resulted in her losing 14 pounds. 26 Feb 2012 | 10:40 pmOne of the first things you’ll notice when you at Ikemen is the posters proclaiming their mantra: “No Ramen, No Life.” Owned by Shigetoshi “Sean” Nakamura, also known as one of the “Four Ramen Devas” in Japan, Ikemen is no run-of-the-mill ramen shop. I’ve been looking forward this for months after rameniac broke the news of its opening. The second thing you’ll notice is the time-warping jazz club vibe. Why are the staff wearing fedoras? Although I have not posted very frequently since leaving Japan, I stil keep in touch occasionally with my former ramen comrades in and outside of work. WHen they send me notable ramen information, I will post it as appropriate.Although easy to understand visually, this use of the "kamakura" compound is a very odd kanji compound that does not appear right away in many dictionaries. Futaba/Kamiogi二葉/上荻
22 Jan 2012 | 6:48 pmFutaba (two leaves) had a wait outside on a cold day of about 20 minutes. It was very hold, humid and cramped inside though. Both the shop and the bowl were jam packed, one with closely-seated customers that took up the 9 seats shoulder-to-shoulder, another with soup components that included cabbage and onions, and a well blended but clearerand still fatty broth. Be sure to read the various notes on the sign, or have someone read them for you. I had the Ramen Jiro look-alike dish and it was fairly good. MenDokoro Okaji/Jinbocho麺処 おかじ/神保町
2 Jan 2012 | 12:57 pmMendokoro Okaji has several types of ramen but the kind that I recommend going for is their sort of version of tori pai tan, rich chicken broth with either a chicken patty or pork slab (sometimes with bones) in it. Tori pai tan (see here) is a slightly creamier version of chicken broth, sort of the chicken version of tonkotsu. This place had a good version, they tried to be all artistic with the garnish and the lemon. They had the usual set of instructions pasted to the counter on when to add the lemon etc. Took them quite a while to fry up the chicken thing though, and they were a bit…
